Here at Hollywood Remembers, we believe that education is the most important step in preventing and treating HIV and AIDS. But education cannot be one-dimensional, nor can it be a one-time event, it requires continuous, ongoing efforts to empower marginalized communities and give them the tools and information needed to make healthy choices and create a stronger, more supportive society.
That's why our educational offerings aren't just about the basics of HIV prevention and treatment, they delve into the history of the HIV pandemic, interrelated STD's, and the legal, social, and economic injustice that plague marginalized communities and lead to higher incidents of exposure.
Hollywood Remembers is unique among HIV/AIDS service organizations in that we are an all-volunteer organization focused on serving the most marginalized in our society – specifically youth, prisoners, ex-offenders, and the homeless. Below are some examples of the ways we help educate these communities and educate society about the issues these communities face on a daily basis.
Theater and Film Production
One unique way that Hollywood Remembers educates the public is through artistic endeavors. Recognizing the unique role of Hollywood in the history of the AIDS Pandemic, we produced an original musical drama entitled "Red Ribbon."
In observance of the 30th Anniversary of the discovery of HIV, we produced a feature documentary film on the early responders to the AIDS crisis, "Voices from the Fray: Celebrating the Unsung Heroes." Excerpts from that production are below.
Speakers Bureau
Different communities require different types of presentations, that's why we've developed a diverse speakers bureau to make educational presentations at schools, offices, and community organizations. Presenters range from 25 years of age to 65 years of age and include doctors, lawyers, activists, public servants, and people living with HIV today. They can speak on a variety of topics and will always work to customize their presentations to the audiences needs.
